In this editorial shoot, we meet Ro, a young model. Although Ro’s grandmother died when she was but four years old, Ro holds distinct memories of her. “She was a very stylish woman, very proper, she wouldn’t leave the house in pyjamas like I would! [laughs] She dressed up to go everywhere, big hair, proper 70’s it-girl, which was so cool to see.” Pointing to her grandmother’s jacket, she recalled, “this is one of the things I have left of her, her jacket, and sometimes I can still smell her on it...so I never wear it out just in case I lose it.” Not only has her grandmother’s sense of style influenced Ro’s love of vintage clothes, the singer/songwriter feels her “old-timey” taste in music also plays a part. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac are regular rotations on her playlist.

In this shoot, Ro’s three outfits are seamlessly paired with gently time-weathered Doc Martens. Ro credits the character stamped boots as seeing her through many events in life. Her last accessory of meaning was an understated crucifix one of a pair each gifted to Ro and her cousin by her grandfather. During one of the Covid-19 lockdowns (2020-2021), Ro’s grandfather was hospitalised because of a brain infection. The rules around isolation and social distancing meant that none of his family could see him, which really saddened Ro. Her grandfather felt guilty about hospitalisation and apologised for the incident when he returned home. This incident was part of a long-term battle with bipolar disorder (BPD). As a family man, Ro’s grandfather struggled with the effect of BPD on his moods which Ro and other family members experienced firsthand.

Now, Ro is relieved to see him doing much better. The crucifix he gave his grandchildren was a physical object that could reach them when his presence could not. For three years, Ro and her cousin have kept their vow to their grandad to never take the crucifix off.

Vintage Value, is a story of why some young people like Ro would choose vintage clothing in a world of fast and new fashion. The vintage clothing here, is rich in meaning, memory, and value.
